Iran and the US have agreed on a "set of guiding principles" for the nuclear deal. Iranian Foreign Ministry

Iran and the United States agreed on a "set of guiding principles" that would lay the foundation for a broader deal during talks in Geneva on Tuesday, said Abbas Araghchi, Iran's diplomatic chief, in a second round of talks. The Iranian side warned that these agreements do not mean that a deal will be concluded.
The first round of negotiations between Washington and Tehran against the backdrop of the American nuclear threat took place in Oman. Iran wanted to limit itself to discussing the nuclear program, while the United States expressed its intention to discuss repression of the Iranian population, as well as a ban on the production of ballistic missiles and the financing of Iranian armed groups in the region.
During the second round of talks in Geneva on Tuesday, the sides “managed to reach broad agreement on a number of guiding principles,” Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Iranian state television.
On (their) basis... we will move forward and begin work on the text of a potential agreement,” he said, calling the meeting “more constructive” than the previous one.
According to Araghchi’s statement, after exchanging the texts of the draft agreements, the parties will set a date for the third round (of negotiations).”
However, the head of the Iranian Foreign Ministry admitted that “it will take time to overcome” the differences between the positions of both countries.
Trump has repeatedly threatened military action against Iran over its brutal crackdown on demonstrations that began in late 2025, as well as its nuclear program.
Washington has sent two aircraft carriers to the region, increasing pressure. The first aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln (according to satellite imagery) with almost 80 aircraft on board was located about 700 kilometers from the Iranian coast as of Sunday.
Its location allows at least 12 American F-35 and F-18 fighter jets to get within striking distance. The second aircraft carrier was deployed over the weekend.
“I don’t think they want the consequences of leaving the deal,” Trump told reporters before the talks began.
Khamenei later stated that “a warship is certainly a dangerous weapon, but a weapon that can sink it is even more dangerous.”
He added that Trump will not succeed in destroying the Islamic Republic.
