Kapan Airport can function as an international airport
Kapan Airport can function as an international airport. This means that a second international airport will appear in Armenia. Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan stated this at a government meeting today. Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures Armen Simonyan noted: “A legal basis is being created for this, since the current concession provides for a certain restriction: within a radius of 250 km from the Zvartnots airport, if the government decides to transform any airport into a civil, local or international one, the existing concessionaire has a preferential right to manage it. However, in this case, the Syunik airport in Kapan goes beyond the scope of this regulation.” “In order for Syunik airport to become international, it is necessary to provide it with appropriate equipment and make the necessary investments to create conditions for border, customs and other types of control,” he added. The decision also provides for the expansion of the capacity of Zvartnots airports in Yerevan and Shirak airports in Gyumri through capital investments of about 425 million US dollars.
